most wine tasting is done double blind. that is, the wine tasters don't know the brand of the wines they are tasting.

the most recent research, published in the wall street journal a month or so back, on wine tasting is that when done double blind, expert wine tasters couldn't tell expensive wines from inexpensive wines (from a few dollars a bottle to a few thousand dollars a bottole).
when done sighted, ie, the wine tasters were told of the wine's prices, the same expensive wines suddenly taste much better than the same inexpensive wines to the same wine tasters.
