German Flagship Battle: The HD800 and the T1
Generally, there is more midrange and low end presence in the HD800, where the T1 has more presence in the trebles. As a result, the HD800 is warmer sounding and fuller bodied, while the T1 is more crisp and precise. A similar comparison can be found in the DT880 and the Sennheiser HD650, both popular headphones that I’m sure you’re very familiar with. The T1 is still clearly within the Beyer house sound, where the HD800 is still clearly within the Sennheiser house sound. Both headphones, being the latest flagship model, do offer a significant improvement over the previous models.
During the CD comparison above, I notice that many times vocal sounds warmer, smoother, and fuller bodied in the HD800. I also notice that the HD800 consistently give a more in-the-venue feel, whereas the T1 gives a sharper and clearer view of the music. For faster music, the T1 tends to carry the pace better. The HD800 tends to work better for medium to laid back music. It does seem that the HD800 works for a wider range of music, but I really can’t generalize too much. For instance, just within Rock, you have Hard and Slow Rock. A lot of people also listen to Jpop these days, and they are just as varied in terms of style and pace. Likewise Electronic, Pop, or even RnB. Modern artists tend to take some elements from other music to enrich their creativity, and generalization would be even more difficult.
Anyway, I know people who listen to Hard Rock and Metal most of the time, and the HD800 just wouldn’t be able to keep up with the pace of their music. Some people listen mostly to Jazz, and I would recommend the HD800 for that individual.
If I can generalize, is that the HD800 is not suitable for fast-paced music, but for medium to slow-paced music, the HD800 is almost always better than the T1. The warmer sound, the fuller body, the spectacular feel of being in a live music venue, and the layered, thunderous bass, is unique to the HD800. Regardless of my personal preference, I think the Beyerdynamic is just a tad behind from Sennheiser in this race.
I’m sure the time will come when we will pitch the Dynamics against the Orthos and the Electrostats. Stay in tune!
